Omega School Chicken Farm
The Omega School Chicken Farm is one among several income-generating projects that have been planned to help Omega School raise income locally in our struggle to become self-supporting. The original plan was to build wooden chicken houses, which was later discouraged due to the type of weather conditions that we have in Uganda. Plans were changed to proceed with the building of brick houses, which are currently in progress. However, due to the steady increase in the student population at Omega School (currently 620 students) the need for a larger campus was realized. This need for campus expansion led to changes to the design of the brick chicken houses in order for them to meet the standards of classrooms for the future relocation of Omega School.
Pastor Fred Tumwebaze reports, “These necessary changes have delayed the start of chicken rearing, but I am now glad to say that this year 2012 we have two (2) rooms ready to house 900 chickens. Funds need to be raised to cover the cost of the chicks, feed, vaccinations, deworming, one guard, two farm workers, as well as transportation and power for the first five months.” This will allow time for the chicks to mature and begin to lay eggs, providing food for Omega students and income as some eggs are sold.
The goal is for the chicken farm to become a self-sustaining, income-generating project that will be a blessing to the Omega students, staff, and community.
PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
To promote community awareness and cooperation among the school community.
To teach and illustrate self-reliance amongst the disadvantaged children and the guardians.
BENEFICIARIES
Omega School children
Surrounding community
Other schools and organizations since this would serve as a demonstration chicken farm.
Gifts toward the $9,000 needed for the purchase and first five months care for 900 chicks are welcomed. Please use the Omega Chicken Farm line on your remittance slip to identify any gift towards this project. Once funds for this project have been raised and transferred to Uganda, there will be chicks on the farm within two weeks time. Together we can make this happen.
Omega School Agriculture Farm
During the month of March most of the 60+ acres of land will be tilled in preparation for the planting of maize and sweet potatoes. The land has finally dried up enough to allow for the drilling rig to return to complete the water well. Upcoming newsletters will report on the progress of this important project.
Computer Lab/Library
Omega School’s library has served multiple purposes this past year. However, 2012 has been set as the year to fully develop the purpose and function of this new building. Computer desks are being constructed as are additional book shelves. Plans are currently being made to bring the Internet to Omega School. Imagine the joyful expression of YOUR Uganda student when he/she sees your smiling face on a computer screen 9,000 miles from where you are sitting. The Internet will also serve as a learning tool for Omega students as they seek a better way of life by means of a well-rounded education. More information will be provided regarding this undertaking as a revised bid is returned to the REACH office for consideration.
